Late in April I announced that I would be searching for an agent to represent my second in the Emma Golden mystery series, The Difficult Sister.
Yesterday I entered into an agreement with Irene Kraas, Kraas Literary Agency. She, forthwith, released the manuscript to editors at six publishing houses. Now I get to sit on my butt and see what happens next.
This part of the publishing process is new to me. With the wine books, the publisher approached me. I queried a couple of agencies for An Unholy Alliance and got rejections. I wasn’t patient. I wasn’t persistent. I wanted that book out NOW! I decided to self-publish via iUniverse and it was a great experience in and of itself. I sold a lot of books, and if need be I can do it all again, this time with a seasoned view of how all that works.
However, I wanted this experience, and I am on for the ride.
I found Irene through a weekly online newsletter called Funds for Writers. Every Friday without fail, Hope Clark delivers tons of information for writers of every ilk. She has more than 50,000 subscribers and is ranked by Writers’ Digest as one of the top 100 newsletters for writers.
This is where I learn which agents are looking for clients and what they are looking for, who’s offering grants, residencies, what-have-you. I recently even entered a couple of contests listed in Funds for Writers.
It takes a freakin’ village, folks. When will the book come out? Who knows? I’ll tell you what, though: This is more fun than I’ve had for a while. Whether we get a nibble this time around or not, the book will come out. And I won’t be sitting on my butt waiting to hear something. I am already working on novel #3.
